PA Fair Report - Bloomsburg, 10/1
by the PA Harness Racing Commission
The final day of racing for 2009 on the Pennsylvania Fair Circuit produced perhaps the greatest surprise of the season.
At the Bloomsburg Fair in Columbia County, three-year-olds were in action in Pennsylvania Sire Stakes for the final time this year. In the day's opening race, Lahaye, a Real Artist colt out of the Roger Hammer Stable, was looking to complete a perfect fair season. He had won all 16 of his previous starts on the circuit, but win #17 would prove to be elusive. Hammer cut the early fractions of 30 and 1:01.4, and appeared to be in fine shape when he reached the 3/4 pole in 1:30.2. However, in the sprint to the wire, Red Hot Scandal, driven by Chris Shaw, popped out of the pocket and went on to defeat Lahaye by a neck in 1:58.2. Red Hot Scandal, a Real Artist colt owned by the Dunn Stable and trained by Boots Dunn, set a new lifetime mark with the effort and posted his seventh win of the season.
Shaw ended up sweeping the colt pace, as he catch-drove Eagle All to victory in the second division in 2:00. Owned by Cory Kreiser, the Allamerican Ingot gelding is trained by Steve Schoeffel.
In the first division of the 3YO filly pace, Real Espresso picked up her 19th win of the year for Hammer, taking a pocket trip behind Harper Lee (Todd Schadel) and scoring in 1:59.1. A daughter of Real Artist, Real Espresso was bred, is trained and owned by Hammer.
The second filly pace resulted in Hammer keeping another horse's record intact. Bell On Wheels finished a perfect 19-for-19 on the circuit this year after winning in 1:59 by more than six lengths. The Western Hanover filly's only "blemish" at the fairs this summer was a rainout at one fair in early July.
In the final filly split, Tremor Hanover went wire to wire for trainer/driver Aaron Johnston in 1:59. The Allamerican Native filly is owned by Charles Moses and Shawn Johnston.
In the first division of the sophomore filly trot, Lady B Pearl overcame a break at the start and made up a 16-length deficit at the 3/4 pole to win in 2:05.1 for driver Todd Schadel. Owned and trained by Kim Good, Lady B Pearl is a daughter of Topgun Hall.
Annie's Wonder, a Wonder Dancer filly owned by Bryce and Cindy Truitt, defeated the second group in 2:05, a season best. Bryce Truitt guided her to the win.
The final division shaped up as a battle between a pair of horses that have combined for 21 wins this year, Bank Star (Timmy Offutt) and BS Genny (Dave Brickell). Bank Star cut the fractions, taking the field to the half in 1:03, but BS Genny went to the front before the 3/4 pole and drew clear for an 8-length win over Bank Star in 2:03.4 for her 12th win of the season. Sue Brickell trains and co-owns the Malabar Millennium filly with her husband, Dean.
Sophomore colt trotters ended the day, and Political Desire (Hammer) took the first split in 2:00.4. Owned by the Dunn Stable and trained by Boots Dunn, Political Desire a son of Tom Ridge, earned his seventh win of the year.
Technicalybroadway, a Broadway Hall gelding, won the second division in 2:02 for trainer/driver Todd Schadel. The 13-time winner this year is owned by Todd and his wife, Christine.
Finally, the season concluded with a win by Columbia County, a Sierra Kosmos gelding. Roger Hammer drove for trainer John McMullen, as the gelding won his 14th race of the year. Owned by John and Michelle McMullen, Columbia County trotted the mile in 2:03.
The top point-earners on the circuit will compete on Saturday afternoon, October 10 at The Meadows in the 2009 Pennsylvania Fair Championships. Each of eight divisions will go for a purse of $20,000 with a 12:15 post for the pari-mutuel card.
